Tamil Nadu: Residents of Korukupet (RK Nagar) witnessed this bizarre sight when O Panneerselvam and loyalists decided to prop up a dummy of former Chief Minister Jayalalitha on a jeep and parade it around in hopes of garnering support. Their purported aim was to recreate her last journey from Rajaji Hall to her final resting place.
Wrapped in the national flag, the replica of the late CM of Tamil Nadu was set on the hood of a jeep. The dummy was garlanded and dressed in a green saree, the trademark of Jayalalithaa. The new symbol of electric pole with two lights is placed strategically at the head of the dummy, to ensure visibility at its maximum. AIADMK leader Azhagu Thamilselvi informs onlookers that Jayalalithaa has come for justice, as the coffin is taken through the RK Nagar constituency.
Mafoi Pandiarajan, the former Education Minister is seen standing next to the coffin at some point in the rally. Just before unwrapping the dummy, a woman speaker talks about Amma raising suspicions upon her tragic death. She demands an urgent probe into the matter.
Indian politics was brought to a new low with this unfortunate act by a faction of the AIADMK. Ever since the demise of Jayalalithaa, the political situation in Tamil Nadu has become unstable. With rival candidates vying for the same position, one can expect a variety of new campaign tactics to unfold with time.
The war between factions continues to grow worse as rival candidate Dinakaran condemned the act as “an insult to the memory of Amma”. There were reports of alleged stone pelting by supporters of Dinakaran on the Panneerselvam faction in Netaji Nagar. Supporters of the ‘Amma group’ staged protests demanding action to be taken against Panneerselvam and others responsible for this demeaning act. DMK leader Kanimozhi has also strongly condemned the act and urged Jayalalithaa’s supporters to respect her.
Panneerselvam and camp have on multiple occasions casted suspicions on Jayalalithaa’s sudden death alleging foul play. They have also been asking for an enquiry by CBI on the issue.
April 12th is the date on which the by-polls will be held. Results are expected to be out by April 17th. Deepa Jayakumar (Jayalalithaa’s niece) is expected to contest the elections, while Dinakaran, Sasikala’s nephew, is being fielded by her faction of AIADMK.
