The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a huge show of power has managed to win 5 of 10 Assembly seats in the recently held bye-elections across 8 states. It retained its earlier 3 seats while adding 2 more to it. The Congress has won 3 of the seats previously held by it – one in Madhya Pradesh and 2 in Karnataka. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet thanked the people for their “unwavering faith,” claiming to be impressed with the performance of the BJP in the bypolls.
The BJP has retained its previous seats of Bhoranj in Himachal Pradesh, Bandhavgarh in Madhya Pradesh and Dhemaji in Assam. The new additions include the Dholpur seat in Rajasthan which it took by defeating Mayawati’s BSP (Bahujan Samajwadi Party), and the Rajouri Garden seat by defeating Kejriwal’s AAP who even lost its deposit.
The ruling Congress in Karnataka celebrated its victory as it retained both assembly seats of Gundulpet and Nanjangud. BJP’s Yeddyurappa conceded defeat, accepting the verdict of the bypolls. CM Mamata Banerjee’s TMC has managed to hold onto its Kanthi Dakshin seat in West Bengal. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha retained its Litipara seat. Counting is still underway for the remaining seats.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took a beating in Delhi’s Rajouri Garden, losing its previously held seat to BJP’s Manjinder Singh Sirsa who said it was a clear signal to the AAP that the people have lost faith in them. AAP’s loss comes after its poor performance in Goa and Punjab assembly elections held last month, prompting leader Manish Sisodia to state that they needed to “revisit “ their “people connect.” The win for BJP in Delhi will be seen as a huge confidence booster ahead of the civic-body elections scheduled to be held on April 23rd.
In an unfortunate turn of events, only 2 percent of voters turned up to vote at the Srinagar parliamentary seat bypoll, as opposed to about 7 percent who showed up to vote on Sunday. This is the lowest voter-turnout in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. The elections were marred by violence and protests which led to the deaths of an unconfirmed number of people and injuring several as well.
