Mumbai: Acclaimed Bollywood actress Reema Lagoo breathed her last early Thursday morning (reportedly around 3:00 am) at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after suffering cardiac arrest. The 59 year old actor complained of severe chest pain after which she was rushed to the hospital, but she unfortunately did not survive the heart attack. She is survived by her daughter Mrunmayee and son in law Vinay Waikul. Her family confirmed her death as they accepted condolences from Bollywood and beyond.
Daughter of Mandakini Bhadbhade, a Marathi stage actress, Reema Lagoo was born Gurinder Bhadbhade. Noticed for her acting prowess while still in school in Pune, she never stepped into the limelight until after she finished her schooling. She began her acting career on stage, moving onto doing Hindi and Marathi films.
She became famous for the roles of mother she played in innumerable films. Some of these famous roles included playing mother to Juhi Chawla in Qayamat se Qayamat Tak, Madhuri Dixit’s mother in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Sanjay Dutt’s mother in Vaastav. She has won four Film-fare Awards in the category of best supporting actress. Her iconic role in Marathi movie Bindhast, which was a suspense story was much appreciated. Although known widely for playing mother to superstars on screen, she has done other varieties of roles as well. She has played the role of a dancer in the movie Aakrosh, as well as a cold and calculative businesswoman in the movie Yeh Dillagi.
Apart from movies, Reema Lagoo has done extensive work in the world of television as well. Famous works include Tu Tu Main Main and Shrimaan Shrimati. Her chirpy persona and friendly disposition earned her several friends in the industry. She was currently seen in a negative role in Naamkaran, a show by Mahesh Bhatt. The role was a far cry from her usual positive portrayals on screen. Mahesh Bhatt mourned the loss in a tweet, stating conclusively and quite philosophically that none of us in fact have the time we think we do.
Married to Marathi actor Vivek Lagoo, she changed her name to Reema Lagoo post marriage. The couple however, decided to separate some time later. They share a daughter together, Mrunmayee who is also an actor as well as a theatre director. Reema Lagoo’s last rites were to be held later in the day at Oshiwara Crematorium.
