Chennai: Esteemed actor and south sensation Rajinikanth fueled further speculations regarding his joining politics in a carefully worded jibe directed apparently at BJP leader Subramanian Swamy. Swamy had earlier raised doubts over the credibility of Rajinikanth in the field of politics, claiming he would be a “disaster” in Tamil Nadu politics and labelling him an “outsider.”
Rajinikanth stated that the political system needs to be changed, his biggest hint so far to excited fans and followers who think he should step into the world of politics. He said the main problem with the existing system is that it does not give priority to the people and does nothing for them. This, he said needs to change. The superstar called himself a proud Tamilian as he addressed fans in Kodambakkam – the birthplace of Tamil Cinema. Saying that he has been a Kannadiga for 23 years of his life, but for the last 44 years he has been a proud Tamilian. He credited his fans for making and accepting him as a Tamilian, in a veiled jibe at Subramanian Swamy who had termed him an “outsider.”
The actor had previously spoken to fans about politics, triggering speculation about his possible entry into this field. He had said that should he decide to dive into politics he would not allow “wrong people” to join him and show the door to “money-minded’ individuals. He stated that currently God was using him as an actor, and if God decides to use him in politics in the future he would step up to it. He assured fans he would decide on the matter at the “right time.”
Reacting to Rajinikanth’s statements, Subramanian Swamy denied that he had called him an outsider. He said he was merely referring to DMK’s constant finger-pointing at the superstar’s Marathi origins. He added that it was up to the BJP’s national leaders to decide on whether Rajinikanth entered the Party. Congress leader and actor Nagma said that Rajinikanth would be an “asset” to any Party he decides to join.
With a vacuum left in Tamil Nadu politics after the death of Jayalalithaa, and depending upon the leadership of an ageing DMK supremo Karunanidhi, fans believe Rajinikanth is the one to guide and take them further. It will be interesting to watch further developments in Tamil Nadu politics with such kind of political storms brewing.
