It got a little too hot in my hometown Delhi this summer. For the uninitiated, summers in Delhi can be cruel. I’d been postponing my vacation for a long time, so to escape the smoldering heat I decided to finally splurge on a holiday. After a little bit of research, I found that San Francisco (USA) is one of the best places to visit in the summer. So I wasted no time to book a flight from Delhi to San Francisco with one of the airlines that offered cheap flight tickets. I was packed and ready to go in no time. As I boarded my flight to San Francisco I wondered what mystery the city held for me. Although anxious, the solo traveler in me was ready to explore a new place I’d heard so much about. Once I stepped foot in the city, all my doubts were gone with the wind. I enjoyed every moment I spent in San Francisco so much that I recommend this city be on everyone’s bucket list. Here’s my list of must-see, must-do things in this awesome city.
- A walk across the Golden Gate Bridge is a must
Standing on the massive structure, as I looked around I wasn’t surprised to see as many locals as tourists enjoying the view from the top. You are allowed to drive, bike or walk across the bridge – the choice is absolutely yours. I recommend that you walk. The view is magical and you can enjoy it at your own pace this way. It also presents a great photo opportunity, with the city skyline and the Pacific Ocean merging into a beautiful horizon. It is arguably one of the most photographed bridges in the world. With air travel made so cheap these days, you should definitely fly down here and take in the breathtaking view.
- Ride a Cable Car!
Officially designated as a historical landmark, a ride on the Cable Car is a must. You can board one for a few dollars and enjoy the ride on San Francisco’s Cable Cars. Built to scale slopes that were too steep for horses, the Cable Car System is an iconic reminder of San Francisco’s pre-automotive age. The cars will go up to a maximum speed of 9 mph and you can even hang out on the footboards to make your ride more thrilling. The cable lines trail through Union Square to the end of California Street.
- Dine on Dumplings and Dim Sum
Really, this is one of those things you must do a thousand times, and then start over. I never got tired of this while on my trip and neither will you. Hong Kong Lounge and Yank Sing were my favorite places to eat at. The ambiance is awesome though crowded often, which is understandable considering the delicious food. Try ordering buns, dumplings and dim sums to start with. Beverages will be found aplenty. For dessert, try the egg custard tart or anything they serve with black sesame sauce.
- Visit the (in) famous Alcatraz
As scary as it might sound, it’s really not that bad. The former penitentiary is truly an amazing sight to behold. You feel chills run down your spine even before you enter the facility. On my visit to Alcatraz, I learned a few things about the place I never knew. Did you know that the first lighthouse of the Pacific Coast was built here? Or that many inmates actually requested to be transferred here? Apparently, they preferred the single person per cell policy of the prison which made them less vulnerable to attacks by fellow prisoners. But there’s a lot more to Alcatraz than just the prison. There are gardens, bird colonies and tide pools. Also, the view from atop the famous Rock is incomparable.
There are a lot more things to do and see here making the list endless. So if any of the above has piqued your curiosity, give into the temptation to visit this awesome place and get busy planning a trip here! Book cheap air tickets or get on last minute flights and travel to the Bay Area pronto!
