The monastery Galden Namgyal Lhatse, which translates to “celestial divine paradise,” was founded in the 17th century by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso as per the wishes of Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso – the 5th Dalai Lama. It is not just the largest monastery in India, but also the second largest one in the world. The monastery has the capacity to easily house around 700 plus resident monks (lamas) at a time. Sitting atop a hill almost 10,000 feet above the ground, the monastery offers an unimaginably beautiful view of the Tawang-chu Valley beneath. Strategically placed between three nations: Myanmar, Tibet and China, the way up to the monastery is from the North Ridge. To the South is the Kakaling – the entrance gate, which is a hut-like structure. Its flanking walls are made of stone and it serves as the main gate of the monastery. Once you pass through this there is another gate further down, a large one without doors. The colors and murals on the gateways and their ceilings are exquisite to behold.
The chief building of the monastery is the “Dukhang” – the Assembly Hall, a three-storeyed building on the North side of the court housing the Temple as well as the ‘Labrang” – the Abbot’s establishment. Its inner walls are covered in murals of Saints and other divinities. The Dukhand also has a gilded image of the Buddha about 8 meters high. The library is a popular place to visit as it houses ancient Buddhist scrolls, images and scriptures. Many of these depict the Buddha in different poses and forms. Monks are taught various subjects like Math, English and Hindi. They are also given lessons on traditional Buddhist education. The Tawang monastery is an iconic center for Buddhist cultural studies. Buddhist festivals like Ajilamu, Choksar, Losar and Tawang-Torgya are celebrated here with much fervor. The ambiance is one where you feel such calm and joy, making it seem like the monastery is peace personified indeed.
