New Delhi: An injured Murali Vijay has been replaced by Shikhar Dhawan in the 16-member squad by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for India’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Opener Murali Vijay has been ruled out of the Sri Lanka Test series because of a wrist injury. The Indian Team is set to play a series of three tests, five ODIs and one T20 match on their tour starting 26 July at Galle.
Murali Vijay initially suffered a wrist and shoulder injury at the time of Australia’s tour of India. He complained of pain while playing a preparatory match. Subsequently, the BCCI decided to include Shikhar Dhawan in the squad as Murali Vijay’s replacement. In a release BCCI Secretary Amitabh Chaudhary said “The All-India Senior Selection on Monday named Shikhar Dhawan as the replacement for injured Murali Vijay in the Test team, which is scheduled to travel to Sri Lanka for a three-match Test series.” About Murali Vijay, he added “Vijay, who had suffered a wrist injury during Australia’s tour of India, has complained of pain in his right wrist. The BCCI medical team has therefore advised that Vijay should continue his rehabilitation program.” The injury has forced Vijay to miss out on the 2017 IPL series and the Champions Trophy as well.
The Virat Kohli-led team will be playing a full series (all three formats) with Sri Lanka after a gap of about eight long years. The test series are set to be played at Galle, Colombo and Kandy. The five ODIs will begin August 20 onwards and the series will be signed off with a single T20 match on September 6. Shikhar Dhawan has so far played 23 Test matches. He has four Test hundreds to his credit and averages 38.52. The last Test he played was in 2016 against New Zealand which was a home series.
