Years ago, tickets for a direct flight from Atlanta to Mumbai were booked and scientists landed down in this city to experience and study the most flabbergasting thing ever formed. It makes us think that if there was an availability of cheap flights from Atlanta to Mumbai in those days, then may be the whole of the NASA could have come down to India. Geologists believe that around a 100 million years ago, the western coast of India was formed as it was detached from the Madagascar. And about 65 million years ago, Bombay was a volcanic hotspot. That led to the formation of vertical columns which are just three in number in this whole planet. One such column stands head held high in our country, India! This one is similar to the other two, the Devil’s Tower National Monument in Wyoming and the Devil’s Postpile National Monument in eastern California, USA. We are talking about the Gilbert Hill in Andheri, Mumbai. Gilbert Hill is hardly 200 feet tall which can be considered to say that it is not much of a topographical giant. But what it lacks in its heights, it makes it up through its age. This hill is over 65 million years old. 65 million years ago! That is towards the end of Cretaceous and the end of K-T extinction. 75 percent of all species including the Dinosaurs went extinct at this time. This place was going crazy with volcanoes, spewing lava and hot gases everywhere. This lasted over 30 thousand years and the eruptions also caused the ‘Deccan Traps’ which are basically the basaltic beds of lava. This volcanic activity also resulted in other basaltic outcrops and Gilbert Hill is one of them. This old inhabitant is one of the world’s finest and rare basalt rock formation found on Earth and now stands amidst a concrete jungle in Mumbai. And although all of this civilization is merely a fraction of its age, it still poses a threat to it. In 2007, after years of lobbying by the geologists, this site was declared as the Grade-II heritage site by the BMC, which means this heritage site is of a local or regional importance, whereby minor changes can be made to it. Grade-I sites are usually of national importance and they cannot be touched or modified. But this site is under threat of renovation due to the increasing human civilization. So all you can do is book cheap flights from Atlanta to Mumbai and come here and see its raw unedited form before this formation goes out of its original shape and structure. Like we said there are two more Devil’s formations which are in USA and around. So if you wish to visit this third one too, then board the earliest direct flights from Atlanta to Mumbai and fly down to this Asian wonder. The journey from Atlanta to Mumbai might be a long way but at the end of the day, it is your choice. A greater distance might show you a greater wonder. Think for yourself!
