One fine day…..!
“What would you do with just 500 rupees in Mumbai in just one day? How will you spend the day to make it memorable?” Vijay asked me over the phone while we were talking about the Lonavala trip that my friends went to recently. He always loved challenging me and that is what he did this time also.
I had never thought about this idea till he asked me. I really didn’t know what to answer. I always knew that Mumbai was the city where people from riches to rags lived equally well. So I guess I will not have to face many troubles doing so. But then I had to do a research on it. So I decided to see what I could do. Setting my ‘bag of necessities’ or that is what I call it, I set out with no card, no passes, just 500 rupees.
So here is what you can do as I did and mainly this write up is for all those foreigners out there who must be planning a budget-friendly trip to India. So all you guys out there, start booking your cheap flights from Los Angeles to Mumbai India (LAX to BOM) because I finally have the solution to Vijay’s question. The main thing you need to know is what really interests you. Go collect a local tourist map and find out what really interests you the most first. So here is what I did.
Most of my trips to Mumbai have been one-day trips, and most of them have been Sundays. But this time I had planned on settling here for a while. I usually get down at CST, stroll past Metro Cinema and towards Marine Lines. Very close to Marine Lines is an excellent Parsi place called Sassanians which serves the best sizzlers ever, and you can get an excellent one in less than Rs.300.
After the meal, I walk over to Marine Drive and spend an hour or so over there. But then there are people who sit there for hours together and wouldn’t even know where time flew by! I walk around and sit near the rocks. I also take a lot of pictures as I am a lover of photography and I have a whole album of Marine Drive pictures. The location never fails to amaze me. Then I walk back to CST. Bang opposite is a place called Cannon which serves excellent, mouth watering pav bhaji. I eat my fill and I still have some change left from my 500-rupee-budget. But then, that’s just me I love Marine Drive, I love walking, and I love food. Getting all three in less than 500 bucks is a dream come true. But then why keep the change when you had decided to spend it today? I bought some balloons and candies, took one for myself and gave the rest to the kids who were playing nearby. Sharing happiness is what we need to end a day perfectly. I am sure Vijay will get excited with this idea of mine and I am sure you are too. If this has been a bit persuasive then I guess you are already looking for any last minute flight available. Don’t worry you have plenty of LAX to Mumbai flights even in the business class section. Just find a way and come here to see what you can do with just 500 rupees in Mumbai. Stay in touch! Adios!
