History behind the haunting
Built in the 18th century, Shaniwar Wada Fort was the abode of the Peshwas of Maratha Kingdom since the beginning. Behind the haunting of this marvelous structure is a story of lust for power, betrayal, deception, violence, blood, and gore. Peshwa Nanasaheb has three sons – Vishwasrao, Madhavrao, and Narayanrao. After the death of the eldest two, Narayanrao – the youngest – was made Peshwa. He was only 16 or 17 at the time and became the youngest Peshwa ruler ever. Being so young, his uncle Raghunathrao tried to guide him. But it is also said that Raghunathrao was always interested in occupying the throne himself. Uncle and nephew never got along as Narayanrao always suspected Raghunathrao of making attempts on the lives of his brothers. Their discord led to Narayanrao ordering Raghunathrao to be placed under house arrest.
Furious over the arrest, Anandibai, wife of Raghunathrao, sought help from the Gardis – assassins of that time who were primarily tribal hunters. The debate is still ongoing about whether it was Raghunathrao or his wife who hired the killers. The assassins, led by Sumer Singh Gardi marched toward the chambers of Narayanrao while he was asleep, killing a clerk and some others who dared to oppose them. Hearing the commotion, Narayanrao guessed that his life was in danger and fled toward his uncle. He screamed for help saying “Kaka! Mala vachva!” which translates to “Uncle! Save me.” But he was caught and dragged away by the Gardis who went on to slaughter him mercilessly. It is said that Narayanrao’s body was hacked into so many pieces that it had to be carried out in pots. The remains of his corpse were burnt by the river on that ill-fated pitch dark midnight. The destructive fire
When you arrive on non-stop flights from USA to India and explore this incredible fort, you will see that parts of it have been burned by fire. In 1828, an all-consuming fire broke out at the fort and destroyed large parts of it. No one knows how the fire which raged on for about 7 days was started. The Fort was abandoned after the fire and hasn’t been occupied since.
On full moon nights, it is said that one can still hear the voice of the brutally slain Narayanrao asking for help which never came. The young Peshwa’s screaming pleas of “Kaka! Mala vachwa!” can be heard over and over again, echoing all through the monument. People who live and work around Shaniwar Wada swear that they have heard Narayanrao’s screams. While these may just be stories, too many people have made similar claims about the fort which cannot be ignored. It is generally advisable to visit the fort during the daytime to explore its brilliant architecture and history when arriving on cheaper flights to India. But to hang around the area after dark on a full moon night is something you must do at your own risk.
