Famously known by her screen name of Cersei Lannister, actress Lena Headey is the latest one to join a growing list of women who’ve spoken against Film Executive and alleged sexual predator Harvey Weinstein. In a series of tweets soon after the New York Times published an article claiming the producer has been sexually harassing and raping women in the industry, Lena Headey revealed a scary encounter she had with the man in question.
“The first time I met Harvey Weinstein was at the Venice Film Festival,” is how she began her tweets and then went on to explain how he invited her to take a walk with him down to the water. This is where she said Harvey made some ‘suggestive comment’ or ‘gesture.’ Lena said she laughed it off and said that “it’d be like kissing my dad!” She said she then urged him to get back to the others and get a drink.
The next time Lena Headey met Harvey Weinstein was a year later in L.A. when he invited her over for breakfast. He spoke at length about work and then ventured to ask about her love life. Lena, uncomfortable with the prodding, tried to steer the conversation to another subject.
“Then he went to the loo. He came back and said, let’s go up to the room. I want to give you a script.”
What came next for Lena was truly scary.
“We walked to the lift and the energy shifted,” says Lena. She felt a sudden unease and tension creep into her as her body went on high alert. As the lift went up, Lena suddenly said to Harvey, “I’m not interested in anything other than work, please don’t think I got in here with you for any other reason, nothing is going to happen.”
Lena claims a sudden, strong sense of “don’t come near me” prompted the sudden outburst at Weinstein. But the ordeal wasn’t over yet. The rejection seemed to make him ‘furious’ and he led her aggressively from the lift toward his room pushing her forward with his hand on her back. Lena said the whole thing made her feel ‘powerless.’
When they got to his room, Weinstein’s key didn’t seem to work and this made him angrier. He turned around and marched Lena down to her car even more aggressively. As he parted, he whispered a chilling warning in her ear, “Don’t tell anyone about this, not your manager, not your agent.”
“I got into my car and cried,” Lena said about breaking down after the harrowing experience.
Whether it was lady luck that helped Lena escape Weinstein that night or a well-meaning hotel employee who probably figured out Weinstein’s intention and switched keys, we will never know. But one thing is for certain that if proved guilty, Harvey Weinstein must be given the maximum sentence possible.
