The library was built over the course of three years
Sprawled across a massive 36,000 square feet, the library was constructed over the course of three years. Lounge areas and reading rooms are housed mainly on the first two floors. There are computer rooms, office, and meeting rooms located on the floors above the reading and lounge rooms. You will find two rooftop patios here as well. Comprising of five levels and such magnificent design, the fact that it took just about three years to be built is in itself a major achievement. Most awesome monuments take much longer than this. For instance, the iconic Burj Khalifa took an estimated six years to be fully completed. The One World Center in New York famed for being the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere took about seven years to be constructed.
The spherical atrium
The major attraction of the Tianjin Binhai Library is its spherical atrium. Right in the center of the atrium and its sparkling white interiors is a giant white sphere. Resembling a giant eye, this unique and stunning feature earned the library its nickname of “The Eye.” The incredible structure was built by the Dutch company MVRDV in collaboration with the Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute. The credit for its remarkable design goes to Starchitect. Five stories tall, the atrium was designed to be a discussion space-cum-auditorium. The stunning feature makes you feel as if you’ve just walked inside of a giant eye. It’s the most remarkable and memorable aspect of the library. Appearing like an iris, the incredible sphere can be seen from the outside through an eye-shaped opening.
The books in the atrium are fake
The books placed on the atrium’s curving shelves are actually all fake and none of them are real. Printed with photos of popular book covers, these are just silk-screened aluminum sheets made to look like books. Stocked all the way up to the roof, these incredible fakes give the impression that the library is stocked up to the brim. The library’s Deputy Director Liu Xiufeng says that the atrium isn’t really meant to store books. He says these are merely for decorative purposes as are the swirling shelves.
There are about 200,000 books in the library currently
The library has a capacity to be able to hold about 1.2 million books at a time but there are currently just about 200,000 books stored here. Stored in rooms away from the atrium, you can browse through whichever ones you like and read them at your leisure. Reading rooms are placed behind the curving shelves around the eyeball center at the bottom two floors. Science fiction, murder mystery, or biographies, take your pick and spend hours leafing through any book of your choice.
The atrium staircase can possibly be a tripping hazard
Dangerously irregular and sparkling white, if you aren’t careful to look where you’re going, the atrium staircase can be a dangerous proposition. Reaching all the way from floor to the ceiling and with no color contrast to help with the vision, the stairs can be tricky to conquer. The shelves are white as is the floor, making the staircase even more difficult to maneuver around. Not one to take the threat lightly, authorities have even placed a guard there who cautions people of the staircase. The risk is even greater when visitors want to click pictures of the stunning, otherworldly architecture on their visit. So when you visit, do make sure to exercise enough caution to avoid unnecessary and potentially dangerous incidents.
