History and architecture of Teen Darwaza!
Located on the east side of the Bhadra Fort, Teen Darwaza is a historical gateway magnificently built and one of the most famous tourist attractions in Ahmedabad. Work on the monument was completed in the year 1415 and events associated with it include historical as well as legendary happenings. The gates are so epic that to celebrate them, they’ve been featured on the logo of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
Built by Sultan Ahmed Shah as soon as the foundation of Ahmedabad was laid, the Teen Darwaza was an eastward egress from the Bhadra Fort and led to a massive enclosure. The roadway to the center is about 17 feet wide and about 13 feet wide of the one on each side. There are brilliantly decorated buttresses on the faces of the piers which lay between the arches which are about 25 feet high. The gateway’s terrace was once roofed over but it was thrown open in 1877 when the gateway was repaired. It is said that the legendary Mughal Emperor Jahangir visited this place along with his beloved wife Noorjahan to see the grand procession which began from this magnificent gateway and went nonstop all the way up to the Jama Masjid.
The famous Maratha inscriptions on Teen Darwaza!
In the 1812, Maratha Governor Chimanji Raghunath decreed that a farman must be inscribed on Teen Darwaza which declared that women had equal rights to inherit ancestral property. The Honorable Governor made the decree after appealing to both communities (Hindus and Muslims). The Devanagari script inscription on the plaque dated 10 October 1812 reads, “Let the daughter get her due share of father’s property without any hitch. So is Lord Vishwanath’s command. If you defy, the Hindu will have to answer Mahadev and the Mussalman will have to explain to Allah or the Nabi Rasool.”
The Eternal Lamp of Teen Darwaza!
The connection of Teen Darwaza to legend is quite deep. The story goes like this: The Goddess of Wealth, Laxmi, came to the gateway one night with the intention to leave the city. But she was identified and stopped watchman Khwaja Siddique Kotwal who asked her to wait until permitted by King Ahmed Shah to leave. Siddique then went to the king and beheaded himself so that Laxmi would stay in the city. His sacrifice led to the prosperity of the city.
Today, you will find a tomb near the Bhadra Gate which is dedicated to Siddique Kotwal, as well as a temple dedicated to Bhadrakali representing Goddess Laxmi. In a cavity of the Teen Darwaza there is a lamp that’s lit continuously without it ever being allowed to go out by a Muslim family. They have done this for over the last 600 years and continue to do so in honor of the legend.
