India is home to diverse situations and beliefs and amidst such beliefs exist a set of strange cultural traditions which will sound completely insane and lame also. Scroll down the articles and find out what they are. Since I don’t intend to disappoint my readers with my pranks, I have just written about them in an abstract form so that the choice is left to you if you want to listen more about them or not. So, let’s continue.
- MUNDAS, JHARKHAND
Now this tribe from the areas of Jharkhand has achieved some differently special features. These tribes are neither backwards nor are they restricted to any region. They have also earned their fame in various arenas like sports, education, politics, literature, revolutions and what not! Remember Padma Shri Ram Dayal Munda? Well, he is also the member of this tribe. So the weird cultural traditions of this tribe include the dividing of their surname. Their surnames are derived from their ancestors who used to be legends once upon a time. Exemplifying it – “The surname Dodrai is attributed to the lineage of the man who once ventured into the forest in search of honey. He found honey in the hollow of a tree but in trying to extract it, his hair and body were completely smeared with the liquid. The villagers carried him home and used 7 vessels of oil to clean and soften his hair.” Got it? Well, that is how the Munda tribes’ surnames are born. Yea, I understand that this is one of the strange customs in India.
- SANTHALS, EASTERN INDIA
Santhals are tribes who live in the regions of West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and Assam. They are not united to the society outside their boundaries. They are also skilled enough to be called multilingual as they speak many other languages. So it is not just Santhali. They are strong enough to develop their own script to be written by the year 1925. So the strange thing about them is that they do not worship any idols or Gods. They do not have temples either. But that doesn’t make them an atheist. They worship gods and ghosts equally. In fact, they are afraid of ghosts and to please them they go for offering animal sacrifices. This custom is often seen in these tribal regions making it one of the weird customs in India.
- BHILS, RAJASTHAN
Talk about polygamy and this tribe from Rajasthan will stand out for sure. But that is not the fact about these people. Here, polygamy is seen amongst women. Yes you heard it right. The Bhil tribe is considered to be one of the most bold and open-minded tribes of India where women are allowed to do anything they want and are considered equal or superior to men. They freely smoke pot, hookahs, consume liquor, participate in everything, marry, remarry and are also considered to be nearly 39% of the population of Rajasthan. This tribe is also known to be one of the biggest tribes of India. It would be really strange to call it one of the weird cultures in India because it’s all about women empowerment after all.
- JARAWA TRIBE, ANDAMANS
The Jarawas come from the Andamans and they are pretty weird when it comes to food. They don’t mind eating anything including raw fish and pig but they wouldn’t want to touch a deer in that case. They consider a deer as sacred and they do not go hunting for it. But his is not the only weird thing about them. When they come to the age of puberty, they exchange their names and are n=given new names. Not just that, the boy has to hunt a wild pig and feed it to the people of the tribe while the girl is dunk in clay, pig oil and gum after which they are given new names. And they are not illiterates at all. They have the knowledge of using their local herbs and plants as contraceptives. Smart eh?
