Odisha is set to revolutionize wildlife tourism with the world’s inaugural black tiger safaris. It will offer an exclusive insight into the lives of these majestic creatures staying in their natural habitat. The melanistic tigers are characterized by dark and dense stripes and found uniquely in the Simlipal Tiger Reserve. These beasts are poised to become the focal point of this extraordinary safari, attracting tourists from around the globe. The documented sightings of black tigers in Odisha date back to 2007. But the upcoming safari marks a historic moment as the world’s first melanistic tiger safari. Odisha has numerous plans for this groundbreaking initiative, showcasing the state’s commitment to preserving its unique biodiversity.

Exclusive Habitat and Strategic Location

The Similipal Tiger Reserve in Mayurbhanj, the exclusive habitat for pseudo-melanistic tigers. It is strategically located near Baripada, approximately 15 km from the Similipal Tiger Reserve. The sprawling world’s first black tiger safari site, covering more than 200 hectares, will dedicate 100 hectares to the display area. While the remaining space is allocated for staff infrastructure, veterinary care facilities, a rescue center, and visitor amenities.

The Reason Behind World’s First Black Tiger Safari Initiative

The primary objective of this ambitious project is to spotlight Odisha’s dedication to preserving and showcasing its rich biodiversity. Beyond the captivating wildlife experience, the safari aims to raise awareness about the essential conservation needs of these rare species. The project awaits statutory clearances, a feasibility study by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), and approval from the Central Zoo Authority before commencement.

About Similipal Tiger Reserve

Spanning 2,750 sq km, the Similipal Tiger Reserve boasts a diverse ecosystem, with 12 rivers, over 300 avian species, 60 reptile species, and 50 mammal species. The addition of the melanistic tiger safari is expected to provide visitors with an immersive experience when exploring nature’s wonders thereby increasing the reserve’s popularity.
