According to the data shared by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), in May 2022, domestic air traffic saw a rise in demand as Indian flights carried a total of 1.20 crore passengers on inland routes, logging almost five-fold year-on-year volume growth.

This number is literally 99% increase since May 2021, when the rate was a mere 21 lakh! Of the 1.20 crores, air passenger traffic was divided between different airlines: IndiGo itself transported about 70 lakh passengers with nearly 58% market share.

Following IndiGo is Go First, a carrier based in Mumbai, which transported nearly 13 lakh passengers. Two airlines part of the Tata Group – Air India and Vistara – are also a part of this 1.20 crores; while Air India carried 8.23 lakh passengers, Vistara carried 9.83 lakh passengers. AirAsia India transported 6.86 lakh passengers. SpiceJet carried the highest rate of passengers—89.1%.

This is certainly a good news that domestic air traffic is normalizing to how it had been before the pandemic and the lockdowns. It is expected that this rise will be for good.
