What steps is Emirates taking for accessible travel?

Emirates has recently become the world’s first Autism Certified Airline. Be it taking initiatives to support neurodivergent travelers or innovating to help passengers with disabilities, here’s how Emirates is making travel accessible for everyone. 

Focus on initiatives that support Neurodivergent travelers

As mentioned above, Emirates is the first commercial airline to get the Autism Certified Airline tag.This achievement follows comprehensive training for over 30,000 staff members. It equips them to assist passengers with autism and sensory sensitivities. 

Emirates airline has even launched sensory guides for Terminal 3 at Dubai Airport. These were developed in collaboration with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). Such guides help neurodivergent passengers anticipate sensory stimuli such as lighting, sound, and crowd levels throughout their journey.

Investing in innovations for passengers with disabilities

At the AccessAbilities Expo 2024 held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, Emirates unveiled an array of accessibility-focused innovations. 

(i) Integration of Be My Eyes App: Emirates is the first airline to integrate with this app, providing real-time video assistance for visually impaired passengers.

(ii) Introduction of Sign Language Robot: A prototype robot capable of communicating in sign language offers guidance to deaf or hard-of-hearing travelers. 

(iii) Launch of Virtual Reality Airport Tour: This tool allows passengers to familiarize themselves with Emirates Terminal 3 remotely, reducing travel anxiety. 

(iv) Unveiling Wheelchair Cube: A protective device designed to safely transport wheelchairs, ensuring they remain intact during flight. 

Introducing accessible ground transportation

Emirates introduced a wheelchair-accessible Chauffeur Drive service for First and Business Class passengers in Dubai. The service features a Mercedes V250 van equipped with an electric wheelchair lift and ramp. This provides safe and comfortable transportation to and from the Dubai airport. 

Enhancing the in-flight experience to promote accessible travel 

Nearly all Emirates flights provides a range of accessibility features, such as: 

(i) In-Seat Accessibility Tools: Including onboard wheelchairs, noise-cancellation headphones and mobility assistance devices. 

(ii) Accessible Inflight Entertainment: The airline’s entertainment system, ICE, includes closed captions and audio descriptions, making content accessible to passengers with hearing or visual impairments. 

(iii) User Interface for Visually Impaired: The upcoming Airbus A350 aircraft will feature an inflight entertainment system with a user interface designed specifically for passengers who are blind or have low vision. 

Emirates is leaving no stone unturned to ensure travel remains accessible to all passengers. As the airline continues to innovate and increase focus on passenger needs, Emirates is setting a benchmark for accessible travel within the aviation industry.
