Incredible India has many wonders both natural and manmade. From the world’s largest crater, the Lunar Crater Lake in Maharashtra to the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra, you’ll be amazed by what the country has to offer. And now, India is set to add a new engineering marvel, the Chenab Bridge. Constructed over the picturesque Chenab River, it is the highest rail bridge in the world and stands at 1177 ft from the river bed.

Dubbed one of the biggest modern-day civil-engineering challenges in railways, this concrete arch bridge is constructed between Bakkal and Kauri (District Reasi, J&K). Once open, the bridge would offer awe-inspiring views of the region to the rail passengers.

All You Need to Know About the Chenab Bridge

The ‘World’s Highest Rail Bridge’ is believed to be 35 m taller than the popular Eiffel Tower in Paris. As stated before. It is part of a 272 km long railway line that will make connectivity between Udhampur and Baramulla hassle-free. Chenab Rail Bridge is 1315 m long and has a wind-resistant design that can withstand winds up to 266 km/hr. It is also said that it can endure high-intensity zone-V earthquakes as well. Around 1,300 workers and 300 engineers worked together to construct this engineering marvel. Also, 28, 660 MT steel, 66,000 concrete, 10 lakh earthwork, and 26 km of motorable roads were fabricated for the construction of the Chenab Rail Bridge. Even after removing one pier/trestle, the Chenab Bridge will remain operational at 30 km/hr, which is a restricted speed.

The Golden Joint: Chenab Rail Bridge

The Chenab Bridge has 93 deck segments, each of which weighs around 85 tonnes. The construction of these decks began simultaneously from both ends of the valley, and the point at which these meet to complete the bridge overarch deck is called ‘the golden joint’. These segments were joined together using High Strength Friction Grip (HSFG) bolts.

Not just connectivity, the Chenab Rail Bridge will also boost tourism in the region as people from across India and the world would come to take a look at the country’s latest engineering marvel.
