Madhya Pradesh, a state blessed with numerous tourist attractions, is taking a bold step towards making its destinations more women-friendly. The state government has launched the ‘Sankalp: Safe Tourism Campaign,’ aimed at empowering women through employment opportunities in the tourism industry while also fostering sustainability. Women-friendly tourist destinations in Madhya Pradesh will further boost tourism in the state.

This groundbreaking initiative began as a 15-day promotional drive from August 10 to August 25. Following its initial launch, the campaign will gradually expand, encompassing 50 tourist locations grouped into 20 clusters. Notably, the project has received the stamp of approval from the Central Ministry of Women and Child Development Department, earning it the title of the “Nirbhaya Scheme.”

Collaboration is key to the success of this endeavor, with the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board partnering with UN Women, the Women and Child Development Department, the Urban Development and Housing Department, and the Police Department. The ultimate goal is to empower women and promote awareness of their safety, thereby creating an environment that works to their advantage.

Under this initiative, women will receive training in various roles to serve tourists. For instance, some will learn to operate boats and provide entertainment to tourists at Omkareshwar, a popular attraction located approximately 80 kilometers from Indore. Others will be trained to narrate stories and educate visitors about the state’s rich history.

The first batch of women, who are currently undergoing training to become certified boat captains, is expected to start working within the next two months. This initiative falls under the broader “Safe Tourism Destination for Women” campaign led by the state’s tourist board. Its objective is to equip women with a range of skills, including hospitality, security, driving, photography, and self-defense, among others. The ultimate aim is to transform Madhya Pradesh’s tourism hotspots into places that warmly welcome female travelers.

Furthermore, they are embarking on an ambitious project to train 10,000 women in various hospitality-related job roles, encouraging their direct participation in the tourism industry. Madhya Pradesh is not only preserving its cultural and natural treasures but also fostering an environment where women can thrive in the world of tourism.
