Interesting Facts About Guruvayur Temple Kerala

This historic shrine, known as Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple, honors Lord Vishnu and the youthful form of Lord Krishna. The temple is surrounded by an array of legends, one of the most prominent of which is related to Lord Krishna. The story tells how Krishna entrusted his charioteer, Udhava, with protecting the Vishnu idol from his own adoration in Dwaraka.

Udhava carried the idol from Kerala and placed it in Guruvayur, seeking the assistance of Lord Vayu, the deity of winds. The location was known as ‘Guru-Vayu-ur’ from then on.

The enshrined Lord Vishnu statue shows the god with four arms. One of these limbs carries the divine conch Panchajanya, another the famed Sudarshana Chakra, and the third the terrible mace Kaumodaki. The fourth arm tenderly holds a lotus garland of precious Holy basil.
