In the 16th century, Indore rose as a bustling commercial center, which would connect Deccan to Delhi. Thereby, it drew the attention of many ambitious kings and rulers, during the most tumultuous times in Indian history when the Mughals were at loggerheads with Marathas.

Interestingly, Indore monuments display the reminiscence of the Maratha Empire (Holkar Dynasty), the Mughal, and the British Raj. Historical Places in Indore

Discover the history of Indore and visit the grand palaces. Two palaces known for their opulence & grandeur are Rajwada Palace and Lal Bagh Palace. 

Rajwada Palace

Popularly known as the Holkar Palace is indeed the most iconic landmark in Indore. The palace was built in the 17th century when there was an ongoing conflict, and wars between Mughal and Marathas. It is quite intriguing that this architectural marvel has a unique blend of Maratha, Mughal, and French styles. It displays the grandeur and opulence of the Holkar rulers. With all the intricate carvings, exquisite arches, and magnificent balconies, the Rajwada Palace stands as a symbol of Indore’s rich heritage and the most famous monuments of Madhya Pradesh

Lal Bagh Palace

An important architectural gem, built by Maharaja Shivaji Rao Holkar. The beautiful architecture is a blend of Indian & European architectural styles. At the entrance, there is a large area of lush garden of roses. The Lal Bagh Palace boasts regal reception halls where you can see regal artwork by Italian and Indian artists. Engross yourself in the captivating collection of artifacts and antiquities. Lal Bagh Palace, like many grandeur palaces in India, has undergone conversion into a museum; nonetheless, it stands as a living testament to the grand lifestyle of the Holkar rulers.

Central Museum Indore

Located in Navlakha, visit the Central Museum, which was built in 1929, and delve into the fascinating history of Indore. The timings are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; closed on Mondays and government holidays. The entry fee is ₹ 10 for Indians and ₹ 100 for foreigners. Central Museum also called Indore Museum is a major tourist attraction. There is a wide range of collections from various relics, objects, and coins. For linguaphiles (and those who love ancient scriptures), there are pre-medieval Jain, Hindu scriptures, and Parmar scriptures. It is an ideal place for those who love history and archaeology.

Khajuraho Temples

 It is a sculptural extravaganza and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Engraving the entire carvings on stone is indeed a remarkable feat, carving temples out of stone. The builders constructed the Khajuraho temples between the 9th and 12th centuries. The engraving and artwork are not so difficult to decode, it depicts life events, love, and spirituality. The exquisite sculptures that adorn the walls are of celestial beings and mythical creatures. In crux, the Khajuraho temples are a true testament to the ancient Indian artistic talent and rich cultural heritage.  

Gwalior Fort

The fort stands on top of a sandstone hill. Gwalior Fort is an architectural marvel that dates to the 8th century. Once again like other historical places in Indore, it is a blend of Mughal and Rajput styles. Apart from the majestic structure, there are marvelous structures around Gwalior Fort like the awe-inspiring Sas-Bahu Temples and Teli Ka Mandir. The spectacular Mahals include Karan Mahal, Vikram Mahal, and Man Singh Palace. Visit the historic Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhor built by Sikh Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. The Gurudwara is quite symbolic and a testimony of the bravery displayed by Guru Hargobind. He was instrumental in releasing 52 kings who were imprisoned inside the fort. 

Indore and the state of Madhya Pradesh offer a plethora of historical places and monuments that unravel the vibrant India’s past.
