The Nashik International Airport terminal is set for further expansion to improve regional air connectivity and handle the expected surge in air traffic during the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
The announcement came during a recent meeting with members of the Nashik Industries & Manufacturers Association (NIMA), held in Nashik. This brought attention to the expected increase in passenger volume and overall air traffic as the city prepares to welcome millions of pilgrims for the sacred event.
What is Simhastha Kumbh Mela?
The Simhastha Kumbh Mela is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, held once every 12 years in Nashik. Devotees from all over India and abroad visit this holy city to take part in the spiritual event.
The upcoming Kumbh Mela is scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2028. Nashik is expected to see a significant rise in domestic and international visitors. This influx places a massive demand on the city’s infrastructure, especially its airport.
Airport Terminal Expansion
Currently, Nashik Airport handles limited commercial flights. While efforts have been made in recent years to boost connectivity, the terminal’s existing capacity cannot handle the traffic the Kumbh Mela brings.
With the Simhastha Kumbh Mela expected to draw millions of visitors, including religious leaders, tourists, and foreign nationals, the airport will need to increase its flight capacity. It must also accommodate larger aircraft and ensure faster processing at check-in and security points.
Although detailed architectural and operational plans have not yet been shared publicly, the expansion is expected to bring significant improvements. It will likely include an enlarged terminal building to accommodate more passengers during peak hours. Additional upgrades may include improved baggage handling systems, extra waiting areas, and enhanced passenger amenities.
The government is committed to ensuring Nashik is fully equipped to handle the spiritual, cultural, and economic opportunities the Kumbh Mela will bring.
The expansion project will progress in phases, ensuring key infrastructure is ready well before the main events scheduled for 2026–28.
The planned terminal expansion will enable Nashik International Airport to play a more prominent role in managing flights during the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2026–28. The upgrades aim to ensure a smoother travel experience for the millions expected to visit the city over the two-year event period.
As infrastructure improves, Nashik is positioning itself as a key spiritual and travel destination on the global map. If you are planning a trip to India soon, then check out Indian Eagle deals. So you can book cheap international flights and have a memorable and affordable vacation.
