Arunachal Pradesh is home to some of the most iconic tourist attractions. This north Indian state attracts millions of visitors every year due to its lush landscapes that offer awe-inspiring views. And now the state is set to be on the global map with its unique connectivity initiatives. The newly-inaugurated Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh is recognised as the world’s longest bi-lane tunnel.

It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. Nestled at a lofty altitude of 13000 ft, this tunnel is a strategic masterpiece designed to ensure uninterrupted connectivity to Tawang, regardless of the challenging weather conditions that often prevail in the region. Chenab Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir, world’s highest rail bridge is also considered as an engineering marvel.

What is the strategic importance of the Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh?

Due to its close proximity to the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the Sela Tunnel holds significant strategic value. It facilitates year-round access to Tawang and other frontier areas near the Chinese border, enhancing both civilian and military logistics in the region.

Built with a substantial investment of INR 825 crore, the Sela Tunnel project encompasses two roads spanning a total of 8.6 kms. It’s not just about length; the tunnel boasts an impressive capacity too. It can accommodate around 3000 cars and up to 2000 trucks daily, with a regulated speed limit of 80 km/hr. The primary tunnel stretches 980 m, while an additional 1.5 km serves as an emergency exit.

Consistently Developing the Northeast

On the same day, PM Modi inaugurated other projects in the Northeast for INR 55,600 crore. This marks a larger developmental milestone. Apart from Aruncachal, this comprehensive initiative spans across other states as well including Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, and Tripura. The Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh is just one piece of the larger mosaic of transformative projects aimed at uplifting the entire Northeast.

Symbolic Inauguration of the World’s Longest Bi-Lane Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh

The opening of the Sela Tunnel was commemorated with the commencement of an Arunachal Pradesh State Transport bus passing through it. Arunachal Pradesh alone witnessed the unveiling of development projects exceeding INR 41000 crore. This showcases the commitment to comprehensive growth and prosperity in the region.

The Sela Tunnel not only stands as a engineering marvel but also represents a symbol of commitment to connectivity, development, and strategic fortification in the challenging terrains of Arunachal Pradesh. As it ushers in a new era of accessibility, it brings promises of progress and prosperity for the people of the region.
