The online auction for the world’s richest cricket league began on Sunday, i.e, 12th June and continued on the second day on 13th June. This auction was held in order to sell television and digital broadcast rights for IPL for years between 2023 and 2027. The widely popular cricketing event that spans for nearly 2 months draws huge TRPs. Sony Corp and Disney are some of the top media giants that were participating in this auction.

Disney Star won the bid with INR 23,575 crore to get the TV rights for the Indian market. Popular media house Viacom18 got the rights for the digital streaming services of five IPL seasons (2023-2027) at a bid of INR 20,500 crore.

Until now, BCCI has earned a total of INR 46,000 crore at the IPL media rights auction 2022. This is nearly two and a half times more than what they made at the 2018 auction, which was just INR 16,347 crore. This year’s IPL media rights auction has made IPL the second most valued sports league in the world only after NFL, which has a value of $17 million per match, while IPL is valued at nearly $13.5 million per match.

According to sources, the ‘rest of the world’ rights for Australia and Europe (along with the UK market) were won by Viacom. The two remaining packages of non-exclusive digital media rights for nearly 18 games, which include the play-offs and the other for overseas TV and digital media rights, might be decided on the third day, i.e, Tuesday, 14th June.

Be it among people of popular cities in India or small towns, IPL media rights can create quite a buzz. The richest cricketing league not only draws eyeballs during the event but also in the various auctions it holds. With the TV and media rights being decided, let’s wait for yet another season of excitement.

If you want to watch IPL matches, you can book flights from USA to India and travel to the major cities across the country to become a part of the live action.
