Delhi Airport Begins Passenger Trials for Full‑Body Scanners

Indira Gandhi International Airport has now started full body scanner trials for passengers. The trial, which was slated to begin in May, kicked off on June 16, 2025. It initially started with staff only. Four scanners, two each in Terminals 1 and 3, are currently in use for the full body scanner trials at Delhi Airport.

How will the full body scanners help passengers at Delhi Airport? 

The full body scanners at Delhi Airport scanners are designed to protect personal dignity and speed up checks. Each full-body scan at Indira Gandhi International Airport takes around three seconds, allowing up to 1,200 scans per hour. 

The newly introduced full-body scanner adds a layer of advanced screening without compromising passenger privacy or health. Unlike X-ray scanners, they don’t emit radiation, making them safe for all passengers, including pregnant women and individuals with medical implants. Notably, traditional metal detectors will still be used for individuals with mobility challenges or those unable to pass through full body scanners.

How long will the full body scanner trials at Delhi Airport last? 

The real-time trials at Delhi Airport will last three to four months. During this phase, feedback will be collected from BCAS, CISF, DIAL, and even passengers. The input will be carefully reviewed. After the trial, findings will be submitted to regulatory bodies. They will decide the next steps based on the evaluation.
