Goa is one of the top tourist attractions in India. Hence, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant recently announced that the state is getting a new international airport at Mopa. This new Goa international airport will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15th August 2022 (India’s 76th Independence Day) and it will start its operations on 1st September 2022.
Goa already has an international airport, the Dabolim Airport at Dabolim Village, but it faces extremely heavy passenger traffic. The construction of the new airport at Mopa called the Greenfield International Airport, was started in order to relieve the Dabolim Airport of this congestion and distribute its users. This new airport will solely be for civilian use, unlike the Dabolim Airport that is mainly for the Indian Navy.
In a few years, it is expected that Goa tourism will soar higher than it already is and become the backbone of the region’s economy; thus, the need for a new international airport in the state was very urgent.
Additionally, this new airport will generate more job opportunities for Goa. A helicopter service is also in the offing, enabling tourists to avail of medical facilities in the neighboring states.
