Indian Airlines plans to reach 50% of the international passenger traffic market by FY28. As per a report by CRISIL Ratings, Indian airlines are likely to see their share in international passenger traffic increase by 700 basis points, reaching around 50% by FY28. The significant increase from 43% in the previous fiscal year marks a new development for the Indian aviation market.

Indian Airlines market share growth is driven not only by increased aircraft numbers but also by effective route expansion.

Indian Airlines Traffic Increase

The increase in international passenger traffic to around 70 million in FY24  from a pandemic-induced low of 10 million in FY21 indicates a strong recovery. Indian airlines have not only recovered but have surpassed pre-pandemic levels, creating a solid basis for future growth.

Over the previous 15 months, the airlines have added over 55 new international routes, increasing the total to over 300. This expansion comes with direct flights from new cities to major destinations in the USA, Europe, and Australia, which shorten travel times and remove layovers.

Airlines Enhanced Fleet

The major investment in widebody and extensive narrowbody aircraft shows Indian Airlines’ commitment to expanding its reach internationally. This is topped with a network expansion strategy aimed at achieving a 14-15% annual growth rate (CAGR) in the international segment over the next four years.

India’s unique geographical setting makes it a connection between the East and West, making it an ideal hub for international flight tickets connecting Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) to Asia Pacific. Indian airlines provide exceptional domestic connectivity when compared to their international counterparts, who only serve a few Indian cities. This wide network provides Indian carriers with seamless complete international connectivity from tier 2 and tier 3 cities with a single ticket.

With aimed development and a focus on excellent service, Indian Airlines is on pace to reach an important achievement in the aviation industry. The expected growth in Indian airline’s market share to 50% of international passenger traffic indicates not just their growing dominance, but also their commitment to connecting India and the other destinations.
