San Francisco is the most prominent and famous city in the world. In California, it is the fourth most populous city. It is not just famous for its beautiful landmarks but also museums. In this article, you’ll know about the best museums in San Francisco.  

SF Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA)

SF Museum of Modern Art is located at the heart of the financial district and covers an area of 1700 sq ft. The museum exhibits over 33,000 artworks which makes it one of the best museums in San Francisco and also the largest in the world. Here, the exhibits range widely from Rene Magritte masterpieces to subway art, sculptures, paintings, photography, soundtracks of film, and many more. Don’t miss to see Roy Lichtenstein, Figures with Sunset, and Henri Matisse, Woman with a Hat (Femme au chapeau). The cost of a ticket  for SFMOMA is around $25. The entry is free for the Bay Area residents on every first Thursday of the month. The SFMOMA opens from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily and extends up to 9:00 PM only on Thursdays. 

The de Young Museum

The De Young Museum focuses on American art which is from the 17th century through the 21st century. It is situated in the Golden Gate Park. It also exhibits the international costumes and textile arts, and art pieces that are from Africa and the Pacific. The museum opens daily at 9:30 AM and closes at 5:15 PM. It remains shut on Mondays. The entry ticket starts at approximately $20. For the Bay Area residents, it is free every Saturday and it is also free for everyone on the first Tuesday of every month. The visitors can enjoy the amazing 360° view of the Golden Gate Park, Downtown SF, Marin Headlands, and the glass-walled Hamon Observation Tower. When you are at the de Young Museum, you must see the Tower, Double Rainbow by Frederic Edwin Church, and The Wire Sculptures by Ruth Asawa.

Legion of Honor

The iconic Legion of Honor museum lies inside Lincoln Park  and is one of the best in the list of San Francisco museums. It has a collection of 4,000 years old ancient and European art on exhibit. This includes three-period rooms, European paintings and decorative arts, a gilded Spanish ceiling, the Hall of Antiquities, and more. Some of the must-see items at the Museum Legion of Honor are The Thinker by Auguste Rodin, Detail of the Ceiling from the Palacio de Altamira from Spain, The Grand Canal, and Claude Monet. The entry ticket costs approximately $15 for a single person. While the Museum offers free visits every Saturday for Bay Area residents, every first Tuesday of the month is also free for all. Every weekend at 4:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday, there are public concerts. The museum opens on Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 AM to 5:15 PM.

Exploratorium

Exploratorium is an inspiring Science Museum which is located at Pier 15, The Embarcadero, San Francisco. This is a must-visit museum in San Francisco if you are a lover of science. The Museum splits into several galleries and each exhibit has a different theme. It is for all ages of people as it is both educational and entertaining. You can explore more than 600 hands-on exhibits on the floor and admire breathtaking views of the city. The must-see exhibits are Mood Lighting, Energy from Death, Everyone Is You and Me, and a sculpture made up of 100,000 toothpicks. The galleries in the museum also include Tinkering, Living Systems, Tricks of Physics, Human phenomena, and many more. The entry fee is around $39, and free access for California Public School teachers. The museum generally opens from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM from Tuesday to Sunday and closes on Mondays. 

Walt Disney Family Museum

If you are a fan of Disney Characters then you must visit Walt Disney Family Museum, which is one of the best museums in San Francisco. The museum is situated in the Presidio. This museum highlights Walt Disney’s life and works. It exhibits the beautiful initial sketches of Disney characters, movies, music, animations, and a 12 ft diameter model of Disneyland. The Walt Disney Family Museum gives you a nostalgic feel and its fascinating journey through the history of animations and some beloved characters. It opens from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily except Tuesdays. The entry price is around $25 per single person and is free for retired and active military families. The must-visit places at this museum are The Invention of the Storyboard, The Moviola, and Propaganda Film Posters.
