How Facial Biometrics Can Help Travelers Breeze Through Customs at Orlando Airport

Airports around the world are embracing technology to enhance operations and provide quick and seamless airport experiences. Orlando International Airport, one of the busiest airports in USA, has implemented an advanced biometric system. Referred to as Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP), this is aimed at improving the customs experience for international travelers. The Orlando Enhanced Passenger Processing program employs facial recognition technology to facilitate more efficient identity verification at the airport.

How does the Orlando Enhanced Passenger Processing program work?

The EPP system at Orlando takes a live photo of the arriving passenger. The system then compares it with existing images in the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) database, such as passport or visa photos. Notably, the automated process aims to expedite customs clearance. This allows travelers to proceed directly to baggage claim without additional document checks.

Is it mandatory to enrol in the Enhanced Passenger Processing program at Orlando Airport?

No, it is not mandatory. Participation in the Orlando Enhanced Passenger Processing program is voluntary. US citizens who prefer not to use the facial recognition system can opt for manual document verification by a CBP officer.

CBP emphasizes that privacy remains a top priority. Interestingly, photos of US citizens are deleted within 12 hours. For non-U.S. citizens, the images are stored according to existing federal guidelines.

Is Orlando the first airport to introduce facial biometrics?

No, Orlando is not the only airport. As of 2025, CBP has deployed facial biometrics at 238 airports in USA for processing inbound international passengers. The system is also used at 49 airports for outbound passengers and at all 14 CBP Preclearance locations worldwide.

This technology is already transforming the customs experience in airports like JFK, LAX, and Atlanta. The adoption of EPP at Orlando International Airport simply strengthens the trend.

What are the benefits of EPP at Orlando Airport?

Orlando is one of the busiest airports. EPP will make the airport experience faster, safer and smarter. Some of the benefits of Enhanced Passenger Processing program at Orlando Airport are listed below:

  • Reduced wait times at immigration.
  • Fewer bottlenecks at customs checkpoints.
  • Increased accuracy in identity verification.
  • Minimal physical contact, which is especially relevant post-pandemic.

Travel is evolving, and Orlando International Airport is leading the charge. With Enhanced Passenger Processing, MCO is showing the world how to balance security with speed.

For international travelers, it means less time in line and more time exploring. For airport authorities, it means smarter resource management. For the U.S. as a whole, it signals a step toward innovation in border security.

If you’re flying into Orlando from abroad, expect a new kind of welcome. One that doesn’t begin with paperwork—but with a smile and a scan.
