One of the oldest zoos in India is Thiruvananthapuram Zoo. It was envisioned and founded by Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, the ruler of Travancore, between the years 1830 and 1846. Here, he placed a wide variety of animals, such as tigers, cheetahs, elephants, deer, and bears. 

In 1995, over a century after its establishment, a modernization project was started to modernize the zoo, with help from the Government of Kerala. Old enclosures were replaced by spacious and more naturalistic enclosures.
