Famous food in Trivandrum you should taste when you’re in the city:

  • Puttu
  • Kerala dosa
  • Idiyappam
  • Appam
  • Malabar parotta
  • Erissery

Here is the information about them in details.

Trivandrum (now officially known as Thiruvananthapuram) is the capital city of the southern Indian state of Kerala, which lies on the western coast. It is known to be rich in culture.

Like many states in India, Kerala, too, has a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian varieties of food, more so on the account of its coastal location. If you ever happen to visit the wonderful and charming Kerala aka God’s Own Country, then you must visit its capital!

Here is some of the most famous food in Trivandrum! Yum!

Puttu

Puttu

In Thiruvananthapuram, the first thing you should try is the puttu! It is essentially a steamed rice cake topped with shavings of coconut. It is usually served as a breakfast item with Kala Channa or black chickpeas (called Kadhala curry).

Puttu with Khadhala curry has been a traditional breakfast. It is as popular in Kerala as idli and dosa. Thus, it is a must try food in Trivandrum. Puttu is sometimes eaten by itself with a cup of hot sweet, black coffee in the morning; or with chicken and fish curries at mealtimes.

Kerala Ghee Roasted Dosa

Kerala Ghee Roasted Dosa

Dosa is one of the most popular southern Indian breakfast items. It is made of cooked lentils and fermented rice. In Thiruvananthapuram, it is popularly roasted with ghee instead of oil, making it crispy and delicious, adding to the taste wonderfully. When served with Kerala’s special sambar, it becomes ever more irresistible!

It is also easy to make and serve at times when you must have something quickly. It is safe to say that Thiruvananthapuram’s ghee roast dosa is the one of the healthiest fast foods. It is another must try food in Trivandrum!

Idiyappam

Idiyappam

Idiyappam is made of cooked rice flour dough, put through a perforated hand press, before steaming it further. The idiyappam by itself is generally bland and almost tasteless, so it is served with coconut-based egg curry, usually at breakfast. It is also served with a vegetable curry and cooked in coconut milk.

To add to the taste, the coconut leaves it is served on is also steamed—you should give this a try! It is an extremely famous food in Trivandrum!

Appam

Appam

If you do pay a visit to Thiruvananthapuram, you must not forget to try appam, a revolutionary dish that is very popular in Kerala. The appam has a thick but soft center; its outer wall is as thin as paper and crispy. It can be considered as a pancake made of rice.

Appam is essentially made of fermented rice ground to a batter and cooked in a traditional wok (kadai). These are as quick and easy to make as dosas! By itself, appam is not very tasty, but you can have it with beef curry or fish fry. It is also served with coconut chutney.

Malabar Parotta

Malabar Parotta

Another Thiruvananthapuram’s food item you should add to your list of must-try foods is the Malabar parotta. It is essentially a flatbread rolled in layers, before being cooked on a tava. It comes out as a crisp and flaky parotta.

Malabar parotta can be served with beef fry or chicken curry. It is a heavier meal than dosa or appam, and a little more complicated to make.

Erissery

Erissery

Erissery or Erishery is another traditional dish of Thiruvananthapuram and eaten all across the state. It is made with ground coconut paste seasoned with roasted coconut. It can be prepared using only one vegetable or multiple vegetables. Lentils or beans can be served with erissery.

The most common variations of this dish are: Mathanga (pumpkin) and Van Payaru (red beans), padavalanga (snake gourd) and parippu (lentils), chena (yam) and vazhakka (raw plantain), chena and van payaru, and kapalanga (papaya).

This is a list of some of the most famous food in Trivandrum. Have you had anything else that is native to the state or the city that didn’t make the list? Do comment below to let us know!
