The Dubai Airshow 2023 began interestingly as Emirates, the renowned Dubai-based carrier, announced a significant order for an extra 95 wide-body aircraft, bringing its total order book to a whopping 295 planes. This strategic move comprises a large purchase for 90 Boeing 777X, 55 of the 777-9 version and 35 of the 777-8, totaling a whopping $52 billion at list prices. This latest Emirates Boeing aircraft order increases Emirates’ 777X family backlog, which now stands at 205 aircraft.

The airline is also on course to be a pioneer as a launch client for Emirates Boeing 777-8 passenger variant, with maiden deliveries scheduled for 2030. In the meantime, the airline has increased its Dreamliner order book by gaining orders for five additional Boeing 787 jets, bringing its 787 backlog to 35 aircraft. This increased commitment includes 15 Boeing 787-10s and 20 Boeing 787-8s, demonstrating Emirates’ faith in the Dreamliner series.

Emirates, a pioneer in the aviation industry, was among the first to choose the 777X, placing an initial order of 150 jets at the Dubai Airshow in November 2013. The total deal, which was completed in July 2014, included an extra 50 options for the 777X, cementing Emirates’ status as a major participant in the aviation sector. With Emirates Boeing aircraft order at Dubai Airshow 2023, the airline aims to further enhance its operations. These additions are believed to improve connectivity with more Emirates flights available on existing routes. Connections between new destinations are also a possibility with an enhanced Emirates fleet.

Flydubai’s Widebody Aircraft Order

Aside from the massive Emirates Boeing aircraft order, low-cost carrier flydubai has made its entry into the widebody aircraft category by ordering 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. These Dreamliners, valued at $11 billion, are scheduled for delivery beginning in 2026, indicating flydubai’s strategic decision to diversify its fleet and expand into long-haul operations. The airline, which previously operated an all-737 fleet of 79 planes, now intends to use the Boeing 787s to launch new routes and increase capacity on existing ones.

Flydubai has only ordered aircraft from the Boeing 737 family. It has an operational fleet of 79 planes and an order backlog of 137 737s. This demonstrates its commitment to Boeing’s narrowbody aircraft.

Apart from Emirates and flyDubai, many airlines placed aircraft orders on the day 1 of the Dubai Airshow. But the humongous Emirates Boeing aircraft order at the Dubai Airshow 2023 highlights the airline’s continuous expansion. It also showcases its strategic ambition in shaping the future of aviation travel. The addition of cutting-edge aircraft to its fleet prepares the airline for expanded operating capabilities. It also demonstrates the airline’s dedication to provide customers with exceptional travel experiences.
