Winter tourism in Kashmir is likely to get a boost this year as the government has decided to keep some of its most beautiful tourist attractions such as Gurez Valley, Sonmarg, and Karnah accessible to tourists this winter season.

Kashmir turns into a winter wonderland with snow adorning its breathtaking landscape featuring towering pine and deodar trees against the backdrop of the gorgeous Himalayan Mountain Ranges.

Although the season of snow depicts the ‘Paradise on Earth’ in a different light, which is a sight to behold, winter is rather a low season for travel as winter tourism in Kashmir comes with a lot of restrictions. Most tourist destinations in Kashmir remain closed during the winter season given the extreme temperatures and unfavorable conditions such as low visibility, which increases the risk of traveling.

But for the first time in the past 70 years, the Kashmir Government will not close Gurez, Sonmarg, and Karnah among other places to tourists this winter of 2022. Moreover, authorities are planning to introduce winter-based activities and adventure sports at these places to promote winter tourism in Kashmir. According to news reports, ski slopes are also proposed in the snow-bound areas to enhance travelers’ experience of winter in the beautiful valley of Kashmir. Reports also suggest the launch of helicopter services to improve connectivity to inaccessible areas across Jammu and Kashmir.
