After over seven years, Air India Boeing 777 planes are in the news again. The airline has acquired six Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in a big move as it restructures its international operations. These iconic aircraft, which were earlier leased from Etihad Airways are now a part of its wide-body fleet.

This acquisition is also part of an overall Air India aircraft purchase plan within the Tata Group to promote the airline globally. The acquisition of the six new jets will aid Air India fleet expansion, particularly on international long-haul flights. These jets have a four-class configuration First, Business, Premium Economy, and Economy.

Is the acquisition of Boeing 777 aircraft a bold move by Air India?

The Air India Boeing 777 acquisitions are timely as the aviation sector is currently dealing with new plane delivery delays as a result of supply chain disruption. Instead of waiting for fresh deliveries, Air India’s move to acquire these already-in-service planes ensures an earlier boost to fleet size and service reliability.

These six planes are only part of Air India’s wider makeover. The airline had previously put in a record order for 470 new aircraft from Boeing and Airbus, including 10 additional 777X jets. These moves reflect the ambition to ramp up and freshen the Air India fleet at a pace that keeps up with India’s increasing need for international flights.

The induction of Air India Boeing 777 aircraft is set to be put to use on prominent routes between India and other important destinations in North America, Europe, and Asia, providing passengers with improved comfort and efficiency.

In making this acquisition, Air India is not merely acquiring more aircraft—it is declaring its intention to reassert itself as a high-end global carrier.
