Tripura’s historical treasure, Pilak, an awe-inspiring archaeological site dating back over 1000 years, is now poised to captivate even more travelers. The state government has taken proactive measures to develop Pilak Tripura as a prominent historical tourism circuit. This will be done along with two other remarkable destinations. It is located in Jolaibari, approximately 100 km from the capital city. Pilak forms part of a chain of significant Hindu-Buddhist sites at the tri-junction of East Bengal (now Bangladesh), Tripura, and Arakkan (Myanmar).

Drawing visitors from all corners of the country, Pilak stands as a renowned tourist spot in Tripura’s South District. To enhance the overall experience, the state and Pilak tourism department has curated an engaging archaeological tourist circuit. This includes Chhabimura and Udaipur in the Gomati district, along with Pilak in the South Tripura district. A comprehensive package tour seamlessly connects these three mesmerizing sites, providing an enriching journey through time and culture.

Every day, approximately 200 people are drawn to the magnificent historical monument Pilak of Tripura. The well-designed tourism circuit commences from Agartala, the capital city, and weaves its way through various captivating destinations, ultimately leading to Pilak. Udaipur, a temple town nestled in the northeastern state, proudly boasts the renowned Tripureswari Kali temple. This temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Notably, Udaipur also houses the esteemed Bhubaneswari Kali temple. This is immortalized in Rabindranath Tagore’s revered novel ‘Rajarshi.’ Another gem in the circuit is Chhabimura, famed for its stunning panels of rock carvings.

Pilak’s Beautiful Stone Engravings

Pilak itself showcases an impressive array of stone engravings depicting Hindu Gods, carved in the Buddhist style. Explorers can marvel at the figurines of Shiva, Surya, Baishnabi, and Mahishasurmardini, as well as a majestic Buddha statue. These remarkable artworks can be found at various sites within Pilak, such as Shyam Sundar Tilla, Deb Bari, Thakurani Tilla, Balir Pathar, and Basudeb Bari. The vast Pilak site, spread over three square kilometers, offers a captivating journey through uplands and lush green valleys in the Belonia subdivision.
