India had a promising start to this year’s Summer Olympics. The athlete’s representing the country grabbed two bronze medals within the first part of the games. But as days passed by, things began to change and India faced tough competition from its opponents. No doubt, the Indian athletes gave their best but their opponents were just a tad bit better. For some athletes, representing India at the Paris Olympics was in itself a great matter of pride. If you haven’t been following the Olympics 2024, here’s a walkthrough of the medals the Indian contingent has won so far.
India at Paris Olympics 2024
India has made a notable impact at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The country has got one silver along with four bronze medals and the shooting contingent has been a standout performer. Furthermore, these achievements come amidst the controversial disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who couldn’t continue her stint at the games after failing to meet the weight requirement in the women’s 50 kg category by just a narrow margin. Had she been given a chance to play, India could have won another medal. A much needed Gold indeed!
Manu Bhaker
Manu Bhaker was the first athlete to grab a Bronze medal for India at the 2024 Summer Olympics. She clinched a medal in the 2024 women’s 10m air pistol event. With this accomplishment, she became the first female shooter from India to win an Olympic medal. During her trip to India, she was met by numerous fans who congratulated her for her achievements.
Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh
In the mixed 10m air pistol team event, Bhaker continued her outstanding run teaming up with Sarabjot Singh. The duo were able to clinch a bronze. Notably, Bhaker became the first Indian to win two medals at the same Olympics since the country’s independence.
Swapnil Kusale
Swapnil Kusale increased India’s total by winning bronze in the men’s three-position 50m rifle competition. India now has seven Olympic shooting medals overall from these competitions.
Indian Field Hockey Team
The Indian men’s field hockey team also helped increase the medal tally for India at Paris Olympics 2024. With a score of 2-1, the team defeated Spain in the bronze medal match. India has now won two straight bronze medals in men’s field hockey at the Olympics. With ten goals in eight games during the competition, captain Harmanpreet Singh stood out as the leading scorer. Furthermore, this bronze medal is a befitting farewell to PR Sreejesh, a veteran goalkeeper who announced his retirement from international matches.
Neeraj Chopra
In the men’s javelin throw competition, Neeraj Chopra won a silver medal in athletics with a throw of 89.45 m. Chopra’s performance demonstrated India’s strength in track and field and was a highlight for the nation.
Overall, the performance of India at the 2024 Summer Olympics has been commendable. Although the country and the government need to do something to train and provide its athletes with world-class facilities, the Indian athletes have been at their very best.
Many experts are of the opinion that the country should spend more on sports infrastructure, rather than just focusing on cricket. This will help budding athletes get the right training and proper facilities to focus on their preparation for bigger international events like Olympics.
