The prayers of air passengers have finally been answered. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has yet again come to the rescue of passengers. DGCA directs airlines with new seat maintenance guidelines.

There had been increased instances of passengers taking to social media and complaining about bad seats, broken tray tables and broken inflight-entertainement systems. This was particularly highlighted on Air India flights to USA, which were operated by old Boeing aircraft. Although the airline has been enhancing its fleet with new jets, it still needs more widebody aircraft that can be deployed on long-haul routes.

New Seat Maintenance Guidelines for Airlines

Under the latest DGCA instructions, airlines should routinely check the serviceability of seats. The directive includes examining seatbelts, tray tables, reclining mechanisms, and overall seat stability. Furthermore, any malfunctioning or broken seats should be repaired or replaced swiftly. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) expects airlines to maintain a high standard to avoid passenger inconvenience.

Why did DGCA direct airlines to ensure seat serviceability?

The new seat maintenance guidelines by DGCA come in response to rising complaints from passengers regarding faulty seats. Numerous issues such as stuck recliners, broken armrests, and unstable seat structures have been frequently reported. Furthermore, these problems not only cause discomfort but can also pose safety risks in case of emergencies.

How will airlines ensure compliance with new DGCA guidelines?

All airlines shall now conduct periodic checks and submit compliance reports. The DGCA will monitor these inspections to ensure adherence to the regulations. Notably, failure to comply may lead to penalties or operational restrictions. The focus is to create a seamless and safe travel experience for passengers.

The new seat maintenance guidelines highlight DGCA’s commitment to improving aviation standards in the country. By maintaining seat serviceability, airlines can enhance customer satisfaction and uphold safety measures. Passengers can expect better seating conditions on flights, making air travel more comfortable and reliable.
